Before the Lineage wars, the dark time that lead to the forming of the pact of seasons, there were 13 separate Kitsune Lineages. Many were wiped out in the war though, and now there are four known lineages, although Kitsune of all thirteen types can be found amongst them.
The thirteen types of Kitsune are celestial, wind, spirit, darkness, fire, earth, river, ocean, forest, mountain, thunder, sound, and time. Kitsune are shifters, but their inner fox is not a seperate entity, but rather a part of who they are. All Kitsune also have access to foxfire, an attack that differs depending on what type of Kitsune they are. Outside of those two common abilities, each type has it's own gifts and magic.
The more powerful a Kitsune is, the more tails they have. Some lineages, like time and celestial Kitsune can live for centuries. As they get older, more tails appear.
Kitsune are born as fox cubs, shifting to a human form as a toddler. Most regain the ability to shift into the fox form during puberty.
